IWITTS has developed and managed numerous multi-site national demonstration and research projects, working in partnership with educators, law enforcement agencies and other employers to achieve gender equity in STEM and CTE classrooms and the workplace.

National Online WomenTech Project

In 2014, IWITTS received a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant for the National Online WomenTech (NOW) Project funded by the Advanced Technological Education (ATE) program to bring IWITTS’s effective team-based WomenTech Educators Online Training and Coaching Support for Implementation to a broader audience of community colleges. The overarching goal of the NOW Project was to provide the national community college ATE network with evidence-based practices in outreach, teaching skills, and learning via online professional development to increase enrollment and retention of women (and retention of men) in community college STEM/CTE courses in which women are underrepresented.

The WomenTech Educators Online Training System developed during IWITTS's CalWomenTech Scale Up Project (see below) and further refined during the NOW Project has cracked the code to helping community colleges broaden participation of women in STEM/CTE and improve retention of both female and male students in less than a year -- in many cases in as little as one regular school semester. Seventeen of 20 community colleges that presented outcomes in virtual presentations approximately 8 months after a training reported success -- many with dramatic increases in female enrollment. The Project Outcomes Report that IWITTS submitted to NSF at the end of the project highlights the key outcomes, tools, resources and activities from the NOW Project.

CalWomenTech Scale Up Project

In 2011, IWITTS received a five-year NSF grant for the CalWomenTech Scale Up Project co-funded by the Research on Gender in Science and Engineering (GSE) and the Advanced Technological Education (ATE) programs to expand the important work of the original CalWomenTech Project by disseminating the results, proven strategies, and resources of the CalWomenTech Project to ATE grantees and a wider community college audience. By providing community college educators nationwide with the tools needed to recruit and retain women and girls in technology programs in which they are underrepresented, the Project will expand STEM education and career opportunities for women and girls. In April 2012, NSF featured the CalWomenTech Scale Up Project in a story on their "Discoveries" website.

CalWomenTech Project

In 2006, IWITTS was awarded a $2 million NSF grant from the program on Research on Gender in Science and Engineering to fund the CalWomenTech Project. Through this five-year grant, eight California community colleges have received expert support and technical assistance to help recruit and retain women into technology programs where they are under-represented. The Project was highlighted by NSF in 2009 for demonstrating significant achievement and program effectiveness.

During the course of this Project, IWITTS developed an extensive collection of resources to help educators recruit and retain female students, including an Outreach Kit with customizable recruitment materials, the Proven Practices Collection and the CalWomenTech Learning Library. All of the 100+ Proven Practices Collection listings are now available on ATE Central as part of a Proven Practices Series.

The WomenTech Project

This project was a three-year effort funded by NSF in which IWITTS worked collaboratively with three community college demonstration sites -- the Community College of Rhode Island, North Harris Community College District in Houston, Texas, and the College of Alameda in Alameda, California -- to help them increase the number of females enrolled and retained in technology programs. The best practices from the WomenTech Projects are captured on a Best Practices CD.

School-to-Work: Women in Science, Engineering & Math Project

In a joint effort with the North Carolina School-to-Work Office and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, and funded by NSF, IWITTS produced an interactive teacher training video and has since conducted hundreds of national and statewide WomenTech Educators Trainings and trained thousands of educators on recruiting and retaining women and girls in technology occupations.
