Female role models on the job: A note from Donna

Hi, I’m Donna Milgram, the Executive Director of IWITTS. I hope that you are as excited as we are about these beautiful banners! Many technology educators are eager to increase the number of women in their classes, and the key to doing that is using images, like those in the banners, of female role models on the job. Women don’t think of themselves in careers like construction, manufacturing, and auto technology because the percentage of women working in these jobs is still so small.
A highly regarded auto technology program that I worked with was naturally very proud of their program and their students. They hung 40 years of class pictures in their classrooms—as you can imagine, almost all of the students in the pictures were male. By hanging a six-foot banner of female role models next to the class pictures, this auto program sent a positive counteracting message. This college saw the largest number of female students to EVER enroll in their auto technology program at one time, in part because of an outreach strategy which included banners like this these.
By hanging the banners at your career events and around campus, you’ll help imprint images of female role models in the minds of your female (and male) students. In a survey of female students in technology programs, seeing banners and posters like these of female role models on the job was one of the top two ways that female students found out about their technology and trades programs.
Don’t let any more potential students miss out on high-paying, rewarding careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). Women bring a different perspective to the classroom and the workplace. It’s up to you to help them picture themselves in these careers!
I hope you’ll find these banners to be a valuable tool in your tool belt as you work towards increasing the number of female students in your classes!
Best regards,

Donna
